Southworth Library in Dartmouth is offering a new book discussion group – The Second Wednesday Book Group. It will meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m. with the first discussion scheduled for March 12th, 2008. The discussions will be led by Southworth Reference Librarian Sharani Robins.

The first book for discussion will be The World to Come : a Novel by Dara Horn. Based on the true story of an art heist from a New York museum, it uses the fictional theft of a Chagall painting to explore one family’s troubled past. The San Francisco Chronicle commented,

“Isn’t there a Willy Wonka gum that tastes like all good foods at once? If so, Dara Horn’s “The World to Come” is the literary equivalent of that confection, equal parts mystery, sprawling novel, folktale, philosophical treatise, history, biography, love story and fabulist adventure… each page of her novel is a marvel.”

Published by W.W. Norton in January 2006, the book was:

New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice

Entertainment Weekly Editor’s Choice

A Book-of-the Month Club Smart Readers Selection

Winner of the 2006 National Jewish Book Award for Fiction

We will set aside copies at Southworth Library to borrow for the book club or you can place it on hold using the online library catalog for the SAILS library network at http://www.sailsinc.org. If you would like to buy the book, Baker Books on State Road in Dartmouth offers a free discount book buying plan or 20% off the cover price.

The second book for the April 9th session will be the novel Accordion Crimes by Annie Proulx. Copies of that title will be available to check out at our March 12th meeting.
