The Trustees of the Dartmouth Public Libraries are happy to announce the appointment of Senior Librarian Lynne Antunes as Acting Director.

Ms. Antunes has served the libraries in various capacities during her tenure. First as Children’s Librarian at the North Dartmouth Library, then as Children’s Librarian at the Southworth Library, then as Branch Librarian at the bustling North Dartmouth branch when it was open full time.

Upon the reduction of hours and service at the North Dartmouth branch, Ms. Antunes returned to Southworth where she took over the responsibility for collection development. She also worked closely with former directors Denise Medeiros, Dolores Tansey, and Jennifer Inglis.

Ms. Antunes has the full support of the Trustees and the library staff. Please join us in welcoming her to her new role!

The Town of Dartmouth is encouraging residents to store all lightweight patio furniture and loose items indoors and are also requesting residents and businesses to remove temporary signs, such as banners, a-frames, political signs and any other items of this type to prevent them from becoming projectiles due to the forecasted wind speeds. If you have questions, concerns or need additional information, please call (508) 910-1735. Click Here for more information from the Town including a link to Storm Surge Maps.

The School District Website has information about the decision not to close public schools in Dartmouth. Here is their message:

We are continuing to monitor the approach of Hurricane Bob [they must mean Earl!] which is expected to pass by this region at approximately 2 am on Saturday morning. All indications are that while we may see some rain developing at mid-day, the primary storm threat is not expected to develop in the Dartmouth area until late afternoon/evening. Given this forecast the Dartmouth Schools will run on their regular school day schedules. Afterschool activities however are to be completed no later than 4 pm. In the event that a parent/guardian wishes to pick-up their child earlier in the day due to personal concerns over the approaching storm, they are welcome to do so. Thanks for your cooperation.

Thursday September 2, 2010.
Southworth Library will close at 2:00 pm today because of concerns about public safety due to the heat and humidity levels in the building. The North Dartmouth Library will be open from 1:00pm to 8:00pm today.

Items being held for patrons at Southworth will NOT be moved to North Dartmouth as we anticipate reopening Southworth Library tomorrow morning at 9:00am.

The staff and trustees are committed to keeping Southworth Library open as much as possible. We will continue to monitor the air quality in the building and may need to close early on days when conditions become unsafe. In that event, the North Dartmouth Library will be kept open for extended hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank our patrons for their patience at this time.

Southworth Library has re-opened this week with regular hours of Monday-Thursday 9am-8pm, Fri-Sat 9am-5pm. North Dartmouth Library has returned to their regular hours of Monday-Thursday 1-5 pm, Fri-Sat closed.

The Southworth Library air conditioning will have to wait and be fixed when the entire HVAC system gets replaced. The HVAC system is original to the building when it opened in the late 1960′s and at least it has given us a good 40 years of operation without too many repairs until now when it completely expired.

We have installed numerous fans and air circulators around the building and are keeping the windows open 24/7 while it remains warm outside. Feel free to bring drinks in with you to the library during this current mini-heatwave.
